We would like to give you brief introduction of origins of wine making in Georgia. Georgia is located on the eastern shore of the Black Sea, between the Northern and Southern Caucasus. Georgia has an ancient tradition of wine making dating back 5,000 years BC. Many experts believe that Georgia is the birthplace of viniculture and wine. Archeological studies show that wine making was common in Georgia as long ago as the fourth century BC. In addition, many linguists believe that the word "wine" originated in the Georgian language and was subsequently adopted by peoples throughout the world as the universally recognized word for "wine". Viniculture and wine making is common throughout Georgia. However, the historical center for wine making is the Kaheti region in Eastern Georgia. Most Georgian grape varieties grow in this area with ideal soil and weather conditions. Also, major part of wineries are located in Kaheti region.
